In lieu of one of my usual blog posts, I'd like to present to you two articles that I found particularly interesting.

How Knitting Behind Bars Transformed Maryland Convicts by Jillian Anthony (December 2, 2011)

...Each week the men eagerly await the women's arrival, then promptly get to work. “It takes you away a little,” Horton says. “You have to watch what you’re doing, otherwise your stitches will become loose or tight or you’ll skip stitches. It almost makes you feel like you don't have to be anything. You’re all sitting there knitting. You can just be yourself.”...

Idle Pastime: In Off Hours, Truckers Pick Up Stitching by Jennifer Levitz (March 29, 2010)

...Mr. Banks... learned to knit last year after load-volumes slowed. Creating something tangible beats sitting around the truck stop "talking about who has a bigger radio," he said. He's finished a scarf and socks, and is working on a sweater for his wife.

"The fact that you can take strands of thread and basically make something out of it, that's awesome I think," he said. "It's pretty cool stuff, man."...

So awesome! very inspiring! :)

I'd like to add my little story too... not as big, but it's been cute. And very special to me. My grand-mother was a big knitter for my whole child-hood; she's the one who tried to teach me as a child (but it didn't really "stick" back then). When she hit her late 80s and started losing her short-term memory, she had to sell her house and yes, all the bins of wool in her basement. I'm both sad and glad I missed getting all that passed on!

Anyways, it's been very sad for her to be in these nursing homes not having her knitting. So this year for her birthday (92nd!) I gave her a coupon for Knitting time together and we just had the first day. She was thrilled. I showed her the wool and design for her afghan, reminded her how to do it, and off she went!

When we were leaving, she was heading back to her room with her walker. The nursing staff was like "Are you coming to dinner now?" and she said she had to use the bathroom first, but then barely audibly said: "And maybe knit a little bit more" LOL! I hope they were able to drag her away and it hasn't been a problem, otherwise I'll have to keep it with me except the days I go! ;)
